Faith Makes The Difference

2 Nephi 3:21 ". .  the weakness of their words will I (God) make strong in their faith . ."

When we act in faith, our words carry more weight.

There Is a God

2 Nephi 2:14 ". . for there is a God, and he hath created all things, both the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are, both things to act and things to be acted upon." 

To deny the existence of God, one must ignore the workings of our universe and of those beyond.

Ye Shall Prosper

2 Nephi 1:20 ". . Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land; but inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from my presence."

We prosper as we align our physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional health to God's will.

He Shall Feed His Sheep

1 Nephi 22:25 ". . and he (Jesus Christ, the Holy One of Israel) shall feed his sheep, and in him they shall find pasture."

Jesus Christ is our Good Shepherd, our one and only sure way to peace and safety.

Those who go through trials with their hearts open to the Lord grow through trials.

They Set Him at Naught

1 Nephi 19:7 ". . the things which some men esteem to be of great worth, both to the body and soul, others set at naught and trample under their feet. Yea, even the very God of Israel do men trample under their feet . . they set him at naught, and hearken not to the voice of his counsels."

It's possible to pretend God has no part in our lives, but pretending doesn't make it true.

There Was a Great Calm

1 Nephi 18:21 ". . I prayed unto the Lord; and after I had prayed the winds did cease, and the storm did cease, and there was a great calm."

Prayer works to calm the storms of life every time.

Honor Thy Father and Mother

1 Nephi 17:55 ". . worship the Lord thy God, and honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God shall give thee."

I've never gone wrong by following the examples of my "goodly parents." (1 Nephi 1:1)

Learning to Use the Compass

1 Nephi 16:28 ". . I, Nephi, beheld the pointers which were in the (compass), that they did work according to the faith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them."

The gift of the Holy Ghost can't work as a compass unless we work, too.

Everyone has questions. Heavenly Father has answers. Have the faith to ask.

The Time Cometh

All nations will witness The Second Coming of Christ.

Wars and Rumors of War

1 Nephi 12:21 ". . in wars and rumors of wars I saw many generations pass away."

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ will end all wars that have plagued this earth from the beginning.

God Loves His Children

1 Nephi 11:17 ". . I know that (God) loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things."

When all else fails, we know that God's love for each one of his children does not.

The Way is Prepared

1 Nephi 10:18 ". . the way is prepared for all men from the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto me."

All means all.

For a Wise Purpose

1 Nephi 9:5 ". . the Lord hath commanded me to make these plates for a wise purpose in him, which purpose I know not."

Waiting to understand the Lord's purposes before being obedient to his commandments doesn't work.

A Multitude of Tender Mercies

1 Nephi 8:8 ". . I began to pray unto the Lord that he would have mercy on me, according to the multitude of his tender mercies."

Tender mercies happen daily as we pray and pay attention.

The Lord is Able

1 Nephi 7:12 ". . how is it that ye have forgotten that the Lord is able to do all things according to his will, for the children of men, if it so be that they exercise faith in him? Wherefore, let us be faithful to him."

"All things" means all things.

The Fulness of Mine Intent

I Nephi 6:4 "For the fulness of mine intent is that I may persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and be saved."

Records are of Great Worth

1 Nephi 5:21 "And we had obtained the records . . and searched them and found that they were . . of great worth unto us, insomuch that we could preserve the commandments of the Lord unto our children."

Preservation of records makes it possible for the Lord's plan to be passed from generation to generation.

Not Knowing Beforehand

1 Nephi 4:6 ". . I was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do."

Action is the evidence of faith especially when moving forward means one step at a time.

How is it Possible?

1 Nephi 3:31 ". . How is it possible that the Lord will deliver Laban into our hands? Behold, he is a mighty man, and he can command fifty, yea, even he can slay fifty; then why not us?"

When the Lord commands us to do something, that thing is possible.

He Did Visit Me

1 Nephi 2:16 ". . I did cry unto the Lord; and behold he did visit me, and did soften my heart . ."

The Lord is ever ready to visit us and soften our hearts when we earnestly ask for his help.

Come Unto Christ

1 Nephi 1:14 ". . thy power, and goodness, and mercy are over all the inhabitants of the earth; and because thou art merciful, thou wilt not suffer those who come unto thee that they shall perish!"

Come unto Christ -- the theme of The Book of Mormon, beginning, middle, and end.

Names and Order of "Books"

"The Book of Mormon comprises fifteen main parts or divisions, known, with one exception, as books, each designated by the name of its principal author, i.e., 1 Nephi, 2 Nephi, Jacob, Enos, Jarom, Omni, Words of Mormon, Mosiah, Alma, Helaman, 3 Nephi, 4 Nephi, Mormon, Ether, and Moroni."

The Book of Mormon is comprised of 531 pages, 15 "books" (above), and 238 chapters.

Brief Explanation of the Book of Mormon

Summary of Brief Explanation: "The Book of Mormon is (translated from) a sacred record of peoples in ancient America, and was engraved upon sheets of metal."

Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith

"He (the angel, Moroni) said there was a book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this continent . . (and) that the fulness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants;"

Conversion is not a product, but a process. And so, I begin again with gratitude since, just as Nephi,

"I, Renee, having been born of goodly parents . . " (page 1, 1 Nephi 1:1)

Moroni's Plea and Farewell

Moroni 10:32 ". . if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ;"

Moroni 9:25 "My son, be faithful in Christ; . . may Christ lift thee up, and may . . his mercy and long-suffering, and the hope of his glory and of eternal life, rest in your mind forever."

Praying Always for Our Children

We pray always for our children because our hearts yearn always for their peace and safety.

We Must Easily Forgive

Sometimes, it's easier to forgive others than to forgive ourselves.

Promise of the Spirit

To have his Spirit to be with me in all places and at all times is worth submitting my will to His.

Three Important Words

Moroni 4:3 ". . always remember him,"

To remember Jesus and act accordingly at all times and in all places is the dearest of standards.
However, that is not easy for me.

Moroni 3:Preface "Elders ordain priests and teachers by the laying on of hands."

This is the pattern initiated by Jesus.

Mighty Prayer

Moroni 2:2 ". . Ye shall call on the Father in my name, in mighty prayer;"

The soul yearns for prayer like the body yearns for breath.

I Will Not Deny Christ

Moroni 1:3 ". . I, Moroni, will not deny the Christ; wherefore, I wander whithersoever I can for the safety of mine own life."

Evidence of our conversion to Jesus Christ and his gospel shows daily.

Tuning Our Heartstrings to God

Ether 15:19 ". . the spirit of the Lord had ceased striving with them . . for they were given up unto the hardness of their hearts, and the blindness of their minds that they might be destroyed;"

A soft heart tunes its strings to the Lord and to His safety.

Up to No Good

Ether 14:1 " . . there began to be a great curse . . because of the iniquity of the people . . if a man should lay his tool or his sword (down) . . upon the morrow, he could not find it, so great was the curse . . "

The sin and sorrow cycle.

A New Jerusalem

When the time is right.

Hope for a Better World

Ether 12:4 ". . whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world . . which hope . . maketh an anchor to the souls of men . ."

Belief in God is our one sure anchor.

Hearing the Lord's Voice

Ether 11:7 ". . they hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord . . "

We hear the Lord's voice by searching His word, listening to His prophets, praying, and being attentive in our hearts. There are no shortcuts. "Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalms 46:10)

A Choice Land

Ether 10:28 "And they were in a land that was choice above all lands, for the Lord had spoken it."

Those lands are blessed where citizens choose righteousness.

Our Hearts Are Vulnerable

Ether 9:6 "For so great had been the spreading of this wicked and secret society that it had corrupted the hearts of all the people;"

Guarding one's heart from wickedness and corruption is a daily task.

A Recipe for Destruction

Ether 8:22 "And whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret combinations, to get power and gain, until they shall spread over the nation, behold, they shall be destroyed;"

Is this happening in America?

Repentance and Prosperity Go Together

Ether 7:26 "And because the people did repent of their iniquities and idolatries the Lord did spare them, and they began to prosper again in the land."

Repent. The formula isn't new.

Sing Praises All Day Long

Ether 6:9 ". . the brother of Jared (and his people) did sing praises unto the Lord . . all the day long;"

Where do I sign up for this choir?

The Last Day

Ether 5:6 ". . we shall stand before God at the last day."

God knows and loves each of us and wants us to be ready when we stand before Him one by one.

Jesus Leads Us to Do Good

Ether 4:12 "I (Jesus Christ) am the same that leadeth men to all good;"

Jesus is the Good Shepherd.

Jesus Christ is Divine

Ether 3:14 "Behold, I am Jesus Christ. I am the Father and the Son. In me shall all mankind have life, and that eternally, even they who shall believe on my name; and they shall become my sons and daughters."

The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ's divinity.

This is a Choice Land

Ether 2:12 "Behold, this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free . . if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ,"

The formula for maintaining freedom is not complicated.

God Hears and Answers Prayers

Ether 1:35 ". . the brother of Jared did cry unto the Lord, and the Lord had compassion upon Jared;"

The Lord loves each of us. He is waiting and yearning for us to ask -- just pray sincerely!

Pay Attention for a Miracle

The Book of Mormon 9:15 ". . God has not ceased to be a God of miracles."

Pay attention and witness a small or large gift from God -- a miracle -- today.

Choose Jesus -- Choose Happiness

The Book of Mormon 8:38 "Why are ye ashamed to take upon you the name of  Christ? Why do ye not think that greater is the value of an endless happiness than that misery which never dies--because of the praise of the world?"

Jesus Christ Has Risen

The Book of Mormon 7:5 ". . believe in Jesus Christ . . (that) he hath risen again, whereby he hath gained the victory over the grave;"

Through Jesus Christ, we will also live again!

In the Hands of God

The Book of Mormon 5:23 "Know ye not that ye are in the hands of God?"

We control only our own faith, thoughts, words and deeds. God handles the rest.

The Wicked Punish the Wicked

The Book of Mormon 4:5 ". . it is by the wicked that the wicked are punished;"

Perhaps wickedness prepares us to inflict the pain we feel about our poor choices onto others.

Before the Judgment-seat of Christ

The Book of Mormon 3:20 "I write unto you all . . that ye may know that ye must all stand before the judgment-seat of Christ, yea, every soul who belongs to the whole human family of Adam; and ye must stand to be judged of your works, whether they be good or evil;"

That day is coming for each one of us.

Taking Happiness in Sin

The Book of Mormon 2:13 ". . their sorrowing was not unto repentance . . but it was rather . . because the Lord would not always suffer them to take happiness in sin."

Sorrow is good if it leads to repentance.

The Lord will gather his people.

Jesus wants to heal us, and he can.

The Fulness of My Gospel

3 Nephi 16:10 ". . if they shall . . reject the fulness of my gospel, behold, saith the Father, I will bring the fulness of my gospel from among them."

Access to the gospel in its fulness is conditional.

Look Unto Me

Still, by asking, we acknowledge God's desire to help us.

3 Nephi 12:1 "Blessed are ye if ye shall give heed unto the words of these twelve whom I have chosen from among you to minister unto you, and to be your servants;"

We get to listen to the twelve apostles at General Conference this weekend!

Contention is Devil's Play

3 Nephi 11:29 ". . he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil,"

Contention destroys.

Repent and Return to God

3 Nephi 10:6 ". . how oft will I gather you as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, if ye will repent and return unto me with full purpose of heart."

It's not too late to come to Christ and be healed.

Alpha and Omega

3 Nephi 9:18 "I am the light and the life of the world. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end."

From start to finish, there is only one Jesus Christ to recover and redeem you and me.

The Day Christ was Crucified

3 Nephi 8:12 ". . the whole face of the land was changed because of . . the exceedingly great quaking of the whole earth;"

The very earth heaved when Jesus Christ, its Creator, was slain.

Angels Ministered to Him Daily

3 Nephi 7:18 ". . for so great was his faith on the Lord Jesus Christ that angels did minister unto him daily."

Sometimes angels help us, and we might notice their calling card afterward.

Prospering Continually

3 Nephi 6:5 "And now there was nothing in all the land to hinder the people from prospering continually, except they should fall into transgression."

Conversion + obedience = prosperity

I Am a Disciple of Jesus Christ

3 Nephi 5:13 "Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life."

Me too.

Cowards Plunder, Rob and Murder

3 Nephi 4:5 ". . there was no way that (the Gadianton robbers) could subsist save it were to plunder and rob and murder."

In Their Time of Need

3 Nephi 3:25 ". . they did repent of all their sins; and they did put up their prayers unto the Lord their God, that he would deliver them . . "

Repentance and prayer come easier in times of crisis. Why?

The Sword of Destruction

3 Nephi 2:19 ". . the sword of destruction did hang over them, insomuch that they were about to be smitten down by it, and this because of their iniquity."

Sin can overtake and destroy us.

Pay Attention to Prophets

3 Nephi 1:13 ". . I will fulfil all that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of my holy prophets."

Prophets know what's coming and how to prepare. Just listen to them!

The Hardening of Hearts

Helaman 16:22 ". . Satan did stir them up to do iniquity continually . . that he might harden the hearts of the people against that which was good . ."

Satan's lies continue, but he will lose in the end.

Because He Loves Us

Helaman 15:3 ". . in the days of their iniquities hath he chastened them because he loveth them."

It's for our own good . . . where have we heard that before?

Nothing brings us down faster than pride.

The Lord's help is available as we reach for it.

Impart the Word of God

Alma 16:14 "And as many as would hear their words, unto them they did impart the word of God . ."

Wishing we could "impart the word of God" isn't enough.

Take Courage

Alma 15:4 ". . when (Zeezrom) heard that Alma and Amulek were in the land of Sidom, his heart began to take courage;"

The Lord's servants can help when we let them.

When Our Work is Finished

Alma 14:13 "Be it according to the will of the Lord. But behold, our work is not finished:"

Lord, please help me learn and know "my work" and how to finish it.

The Scriptures Are Before You

Alma 13:20 "Behold, the scriptures are before you; if ye will wrest them it shall be to your own destruction."

Wrest means to pull away from, jerk, or force by twisting.

God Knows Our Thoughts

Alma 12:3 "Now Zeezrom . . thou hast not lied unto men only but thou hast lied unto God; for behold, he knows all thy thoughts,"

God knows the truth.

That He Might Destroy

We look forward with confidence when Jesus lights our way.

Jesus Christ is the way . . the only way.

Your Light in the Wilderness

1 Nephi 17:13 ". . . I will also be your light in the wilderness . . . and . . . prepare the way before you"

Jesus Christ is our light IN the tunnel, not just at the end of it.

Complaining -- What's the Point?

1 Nephi 16:22, 29 " . . . they had hardened their hearts again, even unto complaining . . ."

Blaming and complaining versus "faith and diligence" -- we make the choice every day.

A Man Should Inquire

1 Nephi 15:3 " . . . he truly spake many great things unto them, which were hard to be understood, save a man should inquire of the Lord;"

It's easy to dismiss wise counsel if we have already dismissed the Lord.

The Power of the Lamb of God

1 Nephi 14:14 " . . . descended . . . and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God . ."

"The covenant people" are still armed with this power today!

One God and One Shepherd

1 Nephi 13:41 " . . . there is one God and one Shepherd over all the earth."

Jesus Christ is our one God and Shepherd as found in the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

Mists of Darkness

1 Nephi: 12 " . . . mists of darkness . . . leadeth them away into broad roads . . . "

Facebook now offers several new gender choices in addition to "Male" and  "Female." Yup.

The Words of My Father

"1 Nephi 11:5 " . . . I believe all the words of my father."

I didn't always pay attention to the words of my father, but what a blessing to have a father whose words I COULD always believe!

Rely on the Redeemer

1 Nephi 10:6 " . . . all mankind were in a lost and in a fallen state, and ever would be save they should rely on this Redeemer."

Every person can rely on Jesus Christ for help. He loves us. No matter what. Just ask.

The Lord Prepares a Way

1 Nephi 9:6 " . . . the Lord . . . prepareth a way to accomplish all his works . . . "

If it's the Lord's work, he'll make a way. Just stop worrying and be ready.

With All the Feeling of a Tender Parent

1 Nephi 8:37 "And he did exhort them then with all the feeling of a tender parent . . . "

My two-year-old grandson is in the hospital with dehydration after an illness. His parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunts are feeling tenderly after him. We know our love matters.

Keeping the Spirit of the Lord

1 Nephi 7:14 " . . . the Spirit of the Lord ceaseth soon to strive with them; for behold, they have rejected the prophets .  . .

Today is General Conference -- a chance to align with prophets again and keep the Spirit of the Lord.

Write the Things of God

1 Nephi 6:3 " . . . I desire the room that I may write of the things of God."

From all those boxes of memories, select those writings that "may persuade men to come unto God."

Carry Them With Us

1 Nephi 5:22 " . . . it was wisdom in the Lord that we should carry them (sacred records) with us, as we journeyed in the wilderness . . ."

Dear Nephi, Thanks to you, we "carry them with us" on smart phones as we journey in our own 21st Century wilderness!

Let Us Go Up

1 Nephi 4:3 " . . . Let us go up; the Lord is able to deliver us, even as our fathers . . . "

Anyone can complain. Be one who has faith to act!

It is a Hard Thing

1 Nephi 3:5
"And now, behold thy brothers murmur, saying it is a hard thing . . ." 

My dad said, "Don't do the easy thing. Do the right thing."

Because it works.

Neither Did They Believe

1 Nephi 2:13 "Neither did they believe that Jerusalem, that great city, could be destroyed according to the words of the prophets."  That was then (abt 600 A.D.)

This is now (23 Sep, 1995): Excerpt from The Family, A Proclamation to the World (1995):
"We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets."

Praying With All Our Hearts

1 Nephi 1:5 " . . . my father . . . prayed . . . with all his heart, in behalf of his people." 

I understand praying in behalf of "my people," but praying "with all my heart"-- do I get that yet?
